Course Content

The course involves various aspects of the language and has been structured as per the IGCSE guidelines. They have a textbook ‘Studio D A1 and A2′ which includes workbooks as well. The teaching learning process is highly interactive so that oral skills may be strengthened, and students are highly encouraged to talk amongst themselves in German. The basic concepts of grammar are interspersed in between and they learn more through speaking and listening and then understanding the grammar. The syllabus covers the following topics which are spread over two years.

• Travelling and eating (Food and meals)
• Taking a city tour and visiting places in Germany
• Professions
• Hobbies and leisure time activities
• Talking about home towns and homes
• Your family
• Animals
• Festivals
• Places in a town
• A school day
• Vacations

Learning Objectives

The teaching of German in the Doon School has been a very exciting activity, always taught outside the curriculum. For students interested in Foreign Languages, studying German and learning how to speak the language is something that they tackle with a lot of enthusiasm. It opens them to new cultures and promotes tolerance and understanding in their minds. The contents of the syllabus are interspersed with oral activities, presentations, listening DW Channel, role plays, songs, watching films, making it a complete learning experience. Learning German, as a foreign language, instills in them an interest for traveling, for discovering new venues, understanding the German philosophy and becoming more aware of different cultures.

General Comments

In D and C forms there are internal examinations which are graded. These are not affiliated to any external examination board. In D and C forms, the assessment is done by the teacher. They have trials at the end of the term and the allocation of the marks is divided. 80% marks are from the written examination and 20% of the marks are for oral skills. The marks are converted into grades and they appear on the reports as an activity grade.

Skills Acquired by Students

In these two forms, the students are very thorough with grammatical and linguistic skills. They now have all the tools to express themselves. The skills acquired are:

• Interactive skills – With the curriculum demands in A and B form, not much focus is put on their conversations, but they can have a conversation. More importantly, with a little bit of personal efforts, they can start speaking fluently.
• Productive skills – The main focus of the curriculum is on their productive skills. They can write on a wide range of topics.
• Research skills – Students are able to search for essays, movies and songs, and more facts about the country, its language and its culture.
• Receptive skills – They can understand all instructions in class and are able to follow a conversation, weather forecasts and general instructions.

General Comments

At this stage the students are taught the language in depth and it is very rigorous. Since there is no defined syllabus, a vast range of topics are covered. It also involves a
lot of grammar and written exercises. Learning a foreign language also gives them a deeper understanding of their own language and helps them develop linguistic skills and finesse which has a lifelong utility. Students achieve a very high level of the language, although the spoken language has to be cultivated with extra efforts. Students are encouraged to read French literature and stories, which they can manage. They can access websites and search for any information in the target language.

S Form

This particular course content focuses on understanding of expressions through important mediums such as letter writing, email writing and postcard making. From ―self introduction to entertainment and television”, this entire syllabus covers a very important aspect of oral and aural skills as well. By watching short films based on the syllabus and by hearing German, students will be able to pick up and exercise the oral skills as well. Orientation of the particular country is absolutely necessary for a student. Through maps, food guides and recipes, one will be able to understand the weather patterns and living patterns of Germany in particular. A student will able to locate and focus Germany’s place in Europe and in the world through its language and culture.

Comparison of the immediate surrounding with the target language is emphasized, as it will enhance the ability of a student to relate customs and traditions of that country to his/her immediate world.

SC Form

This particular course will take back students to their basic understanding of the language and then carry it forward through long essay writing skills. By seeing advertisements and flyers, they will be able to grasp the situations currently prevailing in Germany. They will be able to understand the student life in Germany and about various academic opportunities for Students in Germany. By visiting social networking sites in German language, they will be able to relate their working knowledge of the language to their mother tongue and then take it further while reading German blogs and making some German friends. Students will be trained to express on current topics related to Germany and India through class discussions and interview. They are encouraged to write their views on PASCH website and thereby look and reflect critically on the topics.
